FORTESCUE, SIR JOHN- english lawyer during henry VI. ancient family. b end of 14th c. 3 times appointed. one of the son's of lincol's inn. 1444 a king's sergeant at law. 1445 chief justice. he was attained of treason in the 1st parliament of edward IV. when H VI fled to scotland, he supposedly appt f chancellor of england. in 1463 f accompanied queen margaret + her court in exile  on the continent + returned . during their wanderings the chancellor wrote instructions for  prince edward. on the defeat of the lancastejs, he made submission to edward  IV + received a pardon. 1471 died old, but no exact date.
