antique IOOF odd fellows pitcher magenta crest-$15
I have only seen this complex crest, a construction using a myriad of IOOF symbols, on one other piece. It is in a museum dedicated solely to Scottish Rite, Masonic, and Odd Fellows treasures and rarities.
The museum has but one example, and it is cataloged as: “Independent Order of Odd Fellows pitcher; white background” - - - “transfer printed design of IOOF symbols; winged figure of Father Time with scythe and Bacchus with grapes; heart in hand, shield with three men's faces; banner reading ‘UPON MY HONOR / QUID RIDES,’ 1790-1820.”
I spoke by phone with a curator, exchanging images by email as we spoke. We both had a good chuckle while trying to decide what to call it – Coat of Arms? Crest? Cartouche?” I think I may go visit the museum. Their example is a multi-color transfer, while mine is a single color I’d call magenta or maybe mulberry. If everyone at the museum is a helpful and friendly as the curator with whom I shared some laughs, it should be a fun place to visit.
