CUMIN- an annual, umbelliferous herbaceus plant, indigenous to upper egypt, arabia, india, and cina + on the mediteranian, hotter, lighter in color + larger than caraway seeds. strong aromatic smell. ancients used it to remedy squeamishness, in middle ages a common spice, used in curry "now" only used medically used by vets.
CUMMING, ROUALEYN GORDON- scottish traveler + sprortsman. known as 'the lion hunter', born 1820, 2nd son of sir william G. gordon cumming. as a boy love of nature, esp wild + sports. educated at eton + at 18 entered indian army.(madras light calvary). due to climate, did not stay long, returned back to scotland. during his stay, laid foundation of his large + interesting collection of hunting trophies + specimens of natural history. after indulging his favorite passtimes in scotland, resolved to visit the prairies + mountains of the far west, but went to south africa instead. joined the cape riflemen + in 1843 began his 5 years hunting, which he told of in book of 1850. left army for freedom + took to explore unknown interior africa, living in his wagon or living w/ 'savages'. his collection shown in london museum in 1851 during great exposition w/ lectures. d 1866.
CUNARD, SIR SAMUEL- 1787-1865. civil engineer, founder of CUNARD Steamships. b nova scotia. son of merchant. as england was going from sail to steam, C joined the scheme, went to england blah blah blah. went from paddle wheel to screw. in 1859 made baronet
