Antique HAND PAINTED Brownfield CABINET PLATE - Chicks-$6

Two chicks, each with an attitude, and there is a limited supply of their quarry; trouble’s a’brewin’ folks. In this case, the chicks are baby chickens, and the quarry is the remained two peas in a bowl. I’m sure there’s a metaphor in there someplace, but this isn’t the time to get into that kinda stuff. The important part is that the artwork on this plate is a good as you’ll find when it comes poultry.

Those little devils are about to go at it.

Brownfield used that mark from 1871 until 1891 – except for one variation. Sometime during that period the Brownfields came up with another son, so they changed “Son” to Sons.” Congratulations! But the British Registry Mark in the diamond makes it easy to decipher the date. It is 1884/85.

love the complex border. It goes all the around the plate evenly, interrupted only by the surface chip shown, lower right. Double-dang-it! Oh well – It’s 125 years old.

Wanna collect the works of some of the world’s best china and porcelain painters? Look first to England.

As you’d expect, especially from this period of porcelain from England, the Aesthetic Movement influenced the border decoration.

I know you’ll love it in spite of the chip. It is most certainly worth the cost of repair – if you’re into that sort of thing.

Rare 1897 CHILDRENS BOOK, Pictures & Stories SUNNY DAYS-$26

Way back 113 years ago, in the same year Dracula was published, so was this wonderful children’s book. I’ve found only 2 others for sale among the gazillion internet booksellers…and this one makes those two look...well, less desirable.

The stories & pictures give us a peek into what lucky children of the day were reading…or being read. Some of the stories include Dolly’s Cradle, Young Seafarer, Baby’s First Christmas, Dog & Cat Life, The Plum Pudding, Our Wild Birds, Ulysses & the Giant, Horse Helps a Dog Fight & many others.

He had lost a large slice, Which all said was nice, But he fell in a fright, When a cat took a bite.

It’s not perfect, but it’s in about as good condition as you’re ever likely to find. Some wear & chipping along edges…light soil…all pages in good condition with no interior marks or bookplate. Do expect minor flaws. The pulp paper is exceptionally good.

The book was published by Donohue, Henneberry & Co., Chicago, and edited by E. T. Roe. SIZE: About 8” x 10”. Unpaginated but 98 pages.

About every other page has a wonderful b/w Victorian illustration--engraved pictures that of children, animals, dolls & historical scenes. And there are two color plates—the first & then one in the middle.

Poetry, nature & folk tales…plus lots of other sweet writings for children—it’s all here along with the fabulous accompanying ink engravings.
