RANDOM 341 OBJECT
Antique WATERCOLOR Painting by Cesare Auguste Detti Young Man w FANFARE TRUMPET -$362
I found Auguste Detti’s turn of the century watercolor in a fine home in southern Indiana quite some time ago, and I was a little taken aback when I did. The home is a stone’s throw from the well known and very old art colony in Nashville, Indiana, so I expected to find some nice old Indiana paintings – but not this – a trumpeter looking for all the world like he stepped out of a Verdi opera.
Then I did a little research, and it all came together.
The painting was sold by the oldest continuously operating art gallery west of the Mississippi, McCaughen & Burr of Saint Louis, and it just so happen M&B also specialize in Brown County, Indiana paintings. This would explain how the couple might have ended up buying art so far from home: They were probably looking for works from their home region. I reckon they just fell in love with this watercolor while browsing.
Both frame and watercolor are in nice condition, with only one bump at a backside corner of the frame and very minor soiling toward the edges of the image. I’ll show you several photos, and you’ll see that it needs nothing. It is ready to hang and enjoy.
However, I did remove it from the frame. It was behind museum glass. I’ll leave it out of the frame for safer shipping.
Who is he? The horn appears to be one that might have used to welcome someone like Falstaff. Think of him as a big fat knight barely worthy of a trumpet herald. The colors have remained strong and vibrant. You won’t be disappointed.
I’m about to do something I’ve not done before. The life of Detti and his rise to fame in Europe as well as the United State is so multifaceted and his group of friends and teachers so wide, I’m going to include the following, a long quote excerpted from the unpublished catalog by Edward P. Bentley.
Cesare August Detti Italian 1847 – 1914
ppoo now this IS a very nice water color, but i have to point out the anatomical um, fuck up. everything is great , but OOMG, that THUMB! nonono. even double jointed, i don't care if it was to make it look better, but no. thumbs can't do that. unless the model moved. but still, i am sure he could've done better. i had a similar issue at schlitz. we were painting on glass old fashioned pointing hands for signs. the 'artist' drew poorly. impossible. i pointed it out to boss. she went over the designers head + i corrected him.
