VINTAGE handmade STEEL BATTLE AXE 20" long- $71
Curiosity can be a huge waste of time, especially if you are an eBay seller trying to list for sale as many things as possible in a limited amount of time.
For instance . . . An hour of my life was wasted this morning because of curiosity. Carrie Nation stood six feet tall and tipped the scales at around 175 lbs., so she stood as a formidable foe of those who cherished their little sip of ‘Who-Shot-John” now and again. Since she carried a hatchet, I’ve always assumed the pejorative “Old Battle-axe” grew out of old lady Nation and the Temperance Movement.
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, I’m wrong. It seems battle-axe was first used as a pejorative in George Ade’s novel, Artie published in 1896. In it, he writes,
“Say, there was a battle-ax if ever you see one. She had a face on her that’d fade flowers.”
