FLEURY, ANDRE hercule de (1653-1743)- cardinal, celebrated minister of louis XV of france. b lodeve. educated by jesuits in paris. became almoner to marie therese, queen of louis XIV, 1698 bishop of frejus, 1715 preceptor of the prince + later louis XV. on the death of  the king in 1723, fl advised his pupil to chose the duke of bourbon as minister + himself a member  of the council. in 1726 at 73, he was made cardinal + made prime minister til death 1743. at the time fl  was entrusted w/ the direction of affairs + the condition of france bad. frace was impoverished  + worn out, + the exchequer emptied by the long wars of the grande monarche + the extravagances of the regent(georgee!). commerce was annihilated, public credit ruined(GEORGEE!), + the govt held in contempt, + the church internal dissections. fl immediately effected reforms. tho peaceful by nature, was twice driven by court intrigues to take part in foreign wars(cheeney!). in aid  of polish father-in-law + the austrian succession. his economy, w/ bordered on avarice, was fatal  to the french cause. navy neglected for costs. polish war half-assed(afghanistan/iWaq). POORLY EQUIPT pomeranian. one of his useful acts was completion of the french library w/ he enriched.
