FLACOURT, ETIENNE DE(1607-1660- french governor of madagascar. b orleans. when named gov by the east india company in 1648, the french troops had mutinied against the previous gov, + a large number of them also killed by the natives. f soon restored order among the soldiers, but less successful w/ the natives + their intrigues + attacks kept him harried the rest of his time there. as he was uncertain about the company, in 1655 he retired to france. not long after he was appt director general of the company,  but returning to madagascar, he drowned on his return to france 6/1660. several unknown districts of madagascar + some small islands near explored by prodders of f + in 1649 took possession of madagascareigne, which he named bourbon. authored histoire de la grande isle madagascar 1658 + a faulty lexicon.
