FIUME (slav-rieka, german-st veit-am-flaum)-
a royal free town + port of hungary. an old + new town. 1869 pop- 14,039 + 4770 in the burbs. mostly roman catholics. has an ancient  roman arch in honor of claudius II. railway.
f  is supposed to occupy the site of ancient liburnian town tersatica, later name vitopolis, + later fauum saneti vita ad flumen. it was destroyed by charlemagne in 799, + renamed under the franks. held by feudal tenure of patriarch of aguileia by the bishop of lola, +in 1139 by the counts of duino til after the end of the 14th c. their counts of wallace; to who it was surrendered in 1471 to the emp frederick III + incorporated into austria til 1776, ruled by governors. in 1723 declared free by charles VI + united w/ croatia by empress maria theresa, + in 1779 declared a corpus separatum of the hungarian crown. in 1809 F occupied by french, but retaken by brits in 1813 + restored to austria in 1814. ceded to hungary in 1822, buut after the revolution of 1848-49 was annexed to the crown lands of croatia for 20 yrs. since 1870 under hungarian control.
