Why, I wonder, did they name the thing sphinx? Where is the community pride in calling a piece of local art a sphincter? I guess we’ll never know because, according to what I’ve read, no mention of the thing has ever turned up in writings of the day; not in hieroglyphics carved on walls; not in any scrolls; nothing.
In that respect, in my opinion, it is a lot like that big bronze bull near Wall Street in New York. Nobody talks about it now that we’ve found out it’s merely a 7,000 lb. symbol of greed and derivatives.
