antique ENGLISH barbotine 1879 pottery vase ROSES- $230

The freeform vase is signed, and dated, carrying the English Registry diamond mark, which, when deciphered, establishes the date of creation as May 12 1879. The signature or factory mark is whole ‘nother matter. Identification of it has eluded my best efforts, though the time I spent researching was brief.

Nonetheless, it is such a powerful example, I’m certain those who seek, collect and hoard the form will not only recognize the signature, they’ll also appreciate the remarkable skill with which the roses were formed and applied. Others would consider it painfully ornate. If you are one of those – shoo! Scat! Come back later.
