I suggest you read the history of this squadron. If it is at all possible to find humor and irony in any history of world war, it is present here. These guys and gals had more training and air time than most any other squadron. The VMB-614 was commissioned October 1, 1943, at Cherry Point, North Carolina. Then they moved from location to location to location, At long last, from Newport, Arkansas, the flight echelon flew to Naval Air Station Alameda, California, then departed on 25 July 1945, arriving on 1 August 1945 at Marine Corps Air Station Ewa on Oahu, Hawaiian Territory. The ground echelon departed San Diego, California in early August 1945 and by 31 August 1945, both echelons were operating.
Two days later, the war ended.
