FERNANDO PO/FERNANDO PAO- island on the w coast of africa. rocky, mountainous volcanic, 'discovered' in 1471 by Portuguese explorer fernando. taken by spain in 1778, but abandoned in 1782. the english settles in 1827, but relinquished it i 1834. spain 1844 til changed name to puerto-de-isabel.

FERNEL. JEAN FRANCOIS (1497-1558)- distinguished french physician. b clarmont. after schooling in this town, he entered the sainte-barbe college in paris + so distinguished himself in math, philosophy, + languages. that after getting his MA, he was offered a professorship. he declined to become a dr.that degree in 1534. his extraordinary general erudition + the skill + success w/ which he sought torevive the study of old greek physicians. gained him a great reputation, + ultimately office of physician to the court. he practiced w/ great success + at his death, left a large fortune. publihed
