FERNANDEZ, DIEGO- spanish adventurer + historian of the 16th c. 1st intended for the church, but 1545 he embarked for peru, where he served in the royal army under alonzo de alvarado. mendoza, marquis of canete, who succeeded A as viceroy, bestowed on f the office of chronicler of peru. as this he wrote a narrative of the insurrection or giron, of the rebellion of gonzalo pizarro + the administration of gasca. published in 1571. well regarded.

FERNANDEZ, JOAM-  aportuguese traveller, 15th c. early was a captive of barbary pirates. while w/ them, acquired knowledge of arabic, + his curiosity towards african geography. on regaining his freedom,joined an expedition + landed at the mouth of the ouro river, where exposed to hardship + danger. he spent 7 m a nomadic life w/ some of the native tribes, + acquired a 'lot of' information about the geography of the interior 1445. 2 years later explored cape blanco area. narrativ collected of his adventures.
