FERMAT, PIERRE De (1601-1665)- mathmatician. while still young, he, along w/ pascal, made some discoveries to the properties of numbers on which after he built his method of calculations probabilities. he discovered a simpler method of quadrations parabolas than that of archimedes, + a method of finding the greatest + smallest coordinates of crooked lines analogous to that of the the unknown differential calculus. his method of maxima + minima created conflict w/ descartes, but the dispute due to a lack of clarity in a statement by F. F for a time councilor for the parliament of toulouse, + in the discharge of the duties of that office he was distinguished for legal knowledge + for strict integrity. he was also a general scholar + linguist. died in toulouse. son samuel de fermat a man of learning + published translations.
