FRANCE.........on his return to paris, NB found things much different. the legislative body, men ventured to denounce him(georgee, katrina- 07); somethings not said in years. NB angrily replied w/ his "pet at, is'est moi",to attack me, is to attack the nation", + abruptlyclosed their session. henceforth, he would rule alone. w/ the ruins of his armies face the invasions to come. the whole conditions of his warfare changed; he must now be defensive, + bear france invaded, even as france had invaded europe. the allies came in w/ little resistance. the austrians from basel to langres; buche w/ prussianscrossed the vosges to nancy; the army of north russians + prussians down from namar onto laon. in all 200,000, doube what NB had. they sat on the inner slopes of the mountains on the northern, north-east, east of france, waiting. NB had 1 advantage. the inner line, but after thebattle of arcis-sur-aube, he tried to paralyse the allies by going for their communications, + so lost his advantage, because instead of hesitating, marched on to paris, defeated motier + marmot in the suburbs + forced a surrender before NB was back, the allied emperors received w/ "long live the king, long live the emperor aexander!" a provisional govt of senators decreed NB"'s downfall, the other constitutional bodies followed; the imperial govt swept away. NB amazed, abdicated 4/1814 on behalf of his son, + finallycompletely. his titles, honors, an income, + the island of elba in full sovereignty were left to him.
