RANDOM ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA

FRANCE..............austria + fred william of germany vague agreement to invade france if L XVI was not set free, the assembly dissolved, the emigrants restored to their positions + dignities. a challenge + temptation to the king. at every step, he + his pals blundered + looked bad, royals stirred yp civil strife, ESPECIALLY thru the clergy + threatened war abroad(IRAN IRAN IRAN IRAN). the  assembly regrouped early 1791. to meet its dangers, the assembly in 11/1791 ordered the emigrants to paris, on pain of their land onfiscated + death. king 'vetoed' the decree + cockblock. they didn't listen to the popular feeling. the assembly then attacked the clergy, king again vetoed + people get L XVI against them + murmur "traitor".
after some hesitation, the german princes began to show signs of moving; troops raised in austria, prussia, piedmont; the other monarchs of europe threatened. france set on foot 3 armies, - one of north under rotchambeau, one underlafayette on the north east, + a 3rd under luckner on the rhine as far as basel. the montagnards alone, distrusting the officers + the king, opposed a declaration of war. all france suspected treason, + had good reason to think that the king's ministers, except narbonne, minister of war, were in communication w/ the enemy, the feeling against the ministers was so strong after the trial of one of them, known to be quee's agent, they all resigned, + a gironist cabinet appointed by the king, roland, a man of intelligence, spirit, + uprightness, married to the noblest lady of these times, -a lady who was the inspiration genius of the gironde, - was made minister of the interior. others of not- dumonriez, the ministry took up a reolution against the allied sovereigns; + francis II, new head of austria, unlike leopold, who never wanted war, was defint, ordering france to replace king, clergy, + nobles. on 4/20/1792 the girondist ministry declared war on F II's ass, + the republic + empire began.
the french army was in a state of confusion; most of the officers had joined the emigrants, eager to show the germans the way to paris; those who remained, were suspected by the people; little money in the treasury, little experience in the camp. mamouriz hoped for a good start invading belgium, restless under austrian empire, + only lately a revolt. but went bad. 1 front checked near tournay, lost its guns + killed their general, dillon + fled w/ cries of treason, a 2nd column was defeated near mons, lafayette + the other generals halted + gathered for defence. all france uneasy. her courage gone? or treachery?
