RANDOM ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA

FRANCE..... capets lost vigor, louis X "le hutin", the quarreller, brief, feudal anarchy + weakness, distress + famine 1315-13156+ campaign against flanders, failure, 6/1316 louis died, queen pregnant, had son named john, lived 7 days.

next philip V, "the tall", no girls allowed. 6 miserable years. he died in 1322,

next charles IV, "the fair", who 6 yr reign ended in 1328. capets caput "cursed by templars".
charles, count of valois, younger brother of phil , another uncle. his eldest son, phil appointed guardian of the pregnant queen of charles. out pops another girl, the barons joined to decide who, no girl or son of a girl, chuck IV's girls no good. Edward III of england claimed, his mom isabella. no girls, so crown phil of valois.
the new monarch found able. had been a great feudal lord, hot + vehement, after feidal fashion; he was now to show he could be a severe master, a terrible king. (OOPS!-georgee. the french did this all the time when a line fizzled!) subdued revolting flemings for cousin louis of flanders + havine replaced him in his dignities, returned to paris. the lords had voted for him for a new feudal monarchy; they were still enjoying crushing the flems. his cousins reigned in hungary + naples, his sisters married to the greatest lords(nepotism, of course); the queen of navarre, his cousin; the young king of england gave him homage for guinne + ponthieu. the barons soon realized they picked wrong. phil VI supported by the lawyers, struck them whenever they gave him a chance. he also was harsh w/ traders, hampering + all  but ruining them, til the country was alarmed + discontented(geogee!). on the other hand, young edward of eng had succeeded to a troubled inheritance, + at the beginning weaker, his own sagacity + the advance of constitutional rights soon enabled him  to repair the breaches in his kingdom + to gather fresh strength from the prosperity + good will of a united people. while france restricted, eng opened her ports, trade grew as it withered in france. by his marriage w/ phillipa of hanault, ed secured a noble queen, the happiness of his people, + good relations w/ the low countries(obama). in 1336 the folly of phil VI persuaded lous of flanders to arrest english traders there; whereon ed stopped the export of wool, + the jacquemart van arteveldt of ghent(at the beginning of his power) persuaded flemish cities to throw of allegiance to their french loving count + go w/ ed. in return Phil  VI conspired w/ the scots, the hereditary foes of eng + their 116 yr war that exhausted both, begins. they brought great, but barren triumphs for eng + the most wars, were a WASTEFUL + TERRIBLE MISTAKE(iWaq) +  inflicted PERMANENT DAMAGE  in eng.
the war began in 1337 til 1453. treaty of bretigny in 1360, treaty of troyes in 1422 + final expulsion in 1453.
phil vi believed himself equal + far reaching plans. the pope in his hands, useful to curb  + harass the emp.. P VI mastered the flemish + w/the help of the scottish king, hoped to embarrass ed III + to have ed cede his french lands. intending to wear him out, but a cold war. ed's interests in a hot war  + he the aggressor. flems + brittany defended + hoped to keep ed away from the heart of france. unlucky phil an idiot, harsh + rash + threw advantages away(tora bora). in flanders the repressive commercial policy, dictated   by phil, gave ed the opportunity in 1337, of sending Derby w/ a fleet + blockade + open flemish arkts + france powerless against brit yeoman-archers. in 1338 ed crossed over to antwerp to look at what could be done, the other front in brittany began in 1341. beginnings gloomy + no glory. did not send defiance to phil til 1339, + proclaimed he was king of france. flems meet the english in the vermanois, no fighting + campaign fizzled. norman + genoese ships threatened s england, landing in south hampton + isle of wight. in 1340 ed returned to flanders, on his way attacked the french fleet at sluys + besieged it + ed had mastery of the channell for centuries, wasted srength + siege of tournai went nowhere. phil in 1340 seized guienne + edinburgh castle fell from brit hands to douglas. john III dies in brittany, john monfort his youngest brother claimed the fief against niece jeanne, daughter of his older bro guy, count of peathiene. salic law-NO GURLZ! jeanne married to charles of blois, whom john III had chosen. charles also nephew of phil, who was on nephew's side. john of monfort appealed to ed III, + the 2 kings met in border strife in brittany. the bretons sided w/ john against the french. both claimants made prisoners; the ladies carried onwaring, jeanne of m against jeanne of blois, all going good for france til phil, w/ a barbarity as (stupid) foolish as scandalous(torture), tempted the chief breton in paris + beheaded them w/ out trial(abu graib). the war which had been suspended by a truce, restarted + the english raised more men + supplies to attack 3 sides- flanders, brittany, + guienne. the flems no good, the people of ghent in 1345 murdered jacques van arteveldt as he was tryingv to persuade them to pic ed as count + ed learning this, went back to england.
