I could see through the glass that the portrait was printed on something other than paper, so I removed it from its original frame to have a look. It is printed on thin ribbon-type silk or maybe satin. Whatever it is, it’s delicate. Together with the Victorian “tree trunk” gilt gesso frame, it is a miracle they even survived.
