Telephone. Telegraph requires sending and receiving equipment and someone who knows Morse (or something like it) code.
How about plain, ordinary electrical power?
Afterthought: I'm guessing, but telegraph systems probably needed a source of electrical power at the sending end.

well, they had telegraph in the mid/late 1800's. morse code sort of texting knowledge now. morse sexting? think there were more telephones before electricity. i think it's a telegraph. googling. doesn't look like a big town. rich as this family was.
Telephone and telegraph, in common parlance, are technologies that require electricity. You would not have a telegraph station in an ordinary or even rich home unless you also had a telegrapher on your staff.
Texting and Morse code are not at all the same thing. I'm texting right now, just using all the required letters.
