I have a LOT to tell you about this piece, including the fact that, while once a newel post at the base of some incredible staircase, it was converted to a wonderful stand many decades ago with the addition of feet. They were professionally made, but they are easily removed if your intent is to once again use it as a newel. We’ve used it for everything from lamps – to marble statues – to bronzes. And yes – That is a stylized carving of a dragon within that dramatically chip-carved center section. Ohio carvers created most anything back during the steamboat days, and I’m almost certain this piece was created in the “Queen City.”
