DREYSE, JOHANN NICHOLAS VON- 1787-1867. inventor of the needle gun. son of a locksmith. b. sommerda. apprenticed in father's shop + 1806-1809 in altenberg + dresden. 1809-1814 in paris where he worked in a gun factory run by a swiss. pauly, returned to sommerda + joined krebiezel in a factory using machine tools. 1824patented new percussion action + experimented in improving shooting. 1827 invented the needle gun/breech--loading + in 1836, w/ help from prussian govt, the 1st complete needle gun. opened gunary in 1841. 1864 enobled w/ his family. d. 1847.
