DRESDEN- caoital of the kingdom of SAXONY on the elbe. known since 1206, of slavonic origin. capital of henry, the illustrious, margrave of miessen, in 1270, but belonged for sometime after his death, 1st to wenceslas of bohemia, then margrave of brandenburg. early in 14th C restored to margrave of miessen. on division of territory in 1485, it fell to the albatine line. almost burned to the ground in 1491, rebuilt + in 16th C, fortifications began + expanded. john george II, in the 17th C formed the grosser garten,+ improved the town, but it was in the 1st 1/2 of the 18th C, under augustus I + augustus II, kings of poland + electors of saxony that it got its present appearance.
more fire. bombarded in 7 yr war in 1760 + 1813 by napoleon + used by napoleon. 1 butress + 2 arches of the old bridge blown up. the french began to dismantle the fortifications + completed in 1817. after french gone, made into gardens + promenades. the revolution in 1849 + more crap. 1866 occupied by prussians.
