Oranges may well have been considered a treat reserved for Christmas.
When I was of an age to have a Christmas stocking, there were figs and dates in it, could have been an orange or two. Nobody asked me whether I liked figs or dates. Always suspected that stuff was my father's idea - would have been special for him as a child.
 

i seem to remember from history and such an orange was a big deal for xmas. not cabbage patch beasties.
