RANDOM OBJECT

i got this at the antique dealer's estate sale. at 1st thinking it was a dough beater, but doesn't have enough wear. sent a pic to my favorite ebayer who know's a lot. he suggested a tire tapper. huh? or was it tire thumper?
anybody here have a better idea?

Comments:
Until I checked, I didn't realize one could buy a "tire thumper". I always figured people just carried a tire iron, jack handle, or child's baseball bat.

I'm thinking it's a pestle. It looks big enough to be used for some kinds of foodstuff rather than medicine or cosmetics. So how big is the thing?

And for future reference, how wide are those wood strips? Also, not that I have a way to check or need to know, is that a table or a really clean floor?

i'd say at least 15 inches. and heavy. seems awfully big for pestle. tho, i showed you a pic of those massive pharmacy ones. it doesn't have enough wear, except maybe old tire thumping.
the flooring strips are pretty wide. about 4 inches of fir. i think they ripped up the hardwood floor to put in the shag rug, maybe. everywhere else is hardwood. and considering ho this house is built, i am not surprised by nice subflooring. was built in 1926. solidly. the floor was redone a few years ago. i am thinking painting it was the better choice.

My point was that if you were grinding corn to make a bowl of grits (order breakfast around here and they may end up on your plate whether you want it or not), you'd want something much bigger than a pharmacy pestle.
Lack of wear just means that it wasn't used much - maybe it wasn't big enough.

well, it has 2 flatter sides. i have seen monster smooshers. i have a large smoosher. it doesn't feel like one. could be for show. but no hanging marks. for grits i thing you need a stone. mmm, in the mood for corn meal mush now.
never had grits.

It looks like a tool for pushing meat into the hopper of a meat-grinder.
