CROME, JOHN- 1769-1821. english landscape painter. founder of 'norwich school'. called old crome, to distinguish from his son. father a weaver. scant education. at fit age, apprenticed to house painter from there led by inborn love of art + desire to by any means get tools + materials + aquaint himself . sometimes did sign boards + at leisure, would sketch. thru a rich art loving friend, enablled to excahnge house painting to drawing master. had access to a collection of dutch paintings w/ he studied. 1790 introduced to william beechy in london + expanded his knowledge and help. 1805 Norwich society. pupils Stark, Vincent, Thirtle, + Bernay chome his son. little or no communication w/ great artists of the time. 1st exhibit at royal academy in 1806. fidelity to nature.
CROMLECH- gaelic or welsh. crom-curved, vaulted + leac/llech- monumental stone. name in britain to megalithic monuments w/consist of a great stone supported by/on 3 or more stones. set in the ground. in france different + called stone circles. blah blah blah.
