In vain the 1st men of rme prayed for moderate terms. he demanded restoration to the volscians all of their land + admission to rome citizenship. at last, his mother, wife volumnia, + his children, accompanied by company of roman matrons of high birth, came to the V camp + by their tears + entreaties prevailed. he led back the volscan army + according to one legend paid w/ his life. niebahr has shown that important parts of the legend are historical.
