COPENHAGEN- blah blah-history. 1st mention of C in danish history in 1027 when kings of norway + sweden took advantage of cannute in England to attack D. called Hofu or haven + only a fishing village. about mid 12th C, Valdemar presented part of island to Axel Hvide, known in D history as Absolon. bishop of Rokskilde + after arch-bishop of lund. in 1165 A erected a castle where Christiansborg palace stands. called axel-hus. the settlement became resort for merchants + aquired the name Kaup mannahofn/Kjobmannshavn or portus mercatorum. bishop A bestowed the castle + village , lands on see of Roskilde + bishop Erlandsen granted municiple rights. augmented in 1284 by king eric Glypping, but attacked by the Lubeck in 1248 + then prince yarimar of riga in 1259. in 1306 it repelled the nowegians, but in 1362 + 1368 captured by Valdemar Atterdag's opponents. In 15th C a new enemy. the hanseatic league, but invasion frustrated by queen phillippa. several kings tried to get it from the see of rokskilde, but not til 1443 that it happened. 1523-1524 christian II against Frederick I: yielded in 1536 to christian III. 1658-1660 unsuccessfully beleagered by charles gustavus of sweden + next year rewarded for its gallant defence. 1660 gave its name to treaty which ended swedish war of frederick VI. 1700 bomborded by united fleets of england, holland, + sweden. 1728 a fire destroyed 1640 houses + 5 churches. another in 1794 consumed christianborg, and a 3rd in 1795 destroyed 943 + more. 1801 the danish fleet destroyed by the english under nelson + 1807 bombarded by british army under lord cathcart. in 1853 lost 4100 to cholera.
