COMINES, PHILIPPE DE- 1445-1509. called the father of modern history, b at the castle of comines. orphaned young. 1463 his goddfather, philipe of burgundy, summoned him to court + soon after 'traded' him to the household of his son , afterwards known as Charles the bold. gained influence over Ch + 1468 appointed chamberlain + councellor. same year when Louis XI trapped in perrone, C cooled Ch's passion + gave advice to L XI + got brownie points. 1772 left bugundy for french court, made chamberlain + councillor. pension of 6000 livres. principality of talmont + other goodies. carried out intrigues in Burgundy for l XI + spent time in Italy. On death of L XI, sued by family from talmont + had to pay damages. plotted against regent Anne de beaujeu + joined the orleans, was arrested in 1489. banished to his estates for 10 years + pay bail. recalled in 1492. opposed expedition of charles VIII. took part in trety of vercelli. retired, but many law suits against him til died. wrote memroirs. 'history'.
