CLEOPATRA- name of several ptolemy princesses. best known, the daughter of ptolemy auletes. born 69 bc. father left her at 17, heir + throne w/ brother ptolemy, whose wife she was to be. a few years later, her bro,or her guardians deprived her of all royal authority. she withdrew to syria, there made plans to take back her authority by force. it was then that julius caesar followed ptolemy into egypt with plans to stay. soon cleo saw her chance + took pains to secure julius. caesar made war for her. ptolemy died and she took the thone w/younger bro to whome she was set to marry(custom), even as she was screwing julius. JC went back to rome +she followed w/ her younger bro, who she soon poisoned + she lived w/ julius. after is assassination, went back to egypt, but during the troubles in rome, she took the part antony, who she had earlier interested. when in cilicia, she went to visit him, in great splendor + he was soon enthralled, following her to egypt + lived there in profuse + wanton luxory. calling thmselves 'osirus + isis'. he did marry octavia, but he went back + he helped her in battle. $ + men + supplies. augustus took advantage of cleo's unpopularity in rome + he declar. when antony lost all cause, she made overtures to Oct in getting rid of antony. A did commit suicide, but her overtures to oct failed + instead of being taken a prisoner to rome, killed herself w/ an asp at 39. said to have spoken 7 languages. 3 kids by antony + maybe son by julius- caesarion.
