CHABRIAS- celebrated athenian general. assumed command in 392 bc. defeated spartans at aegina 388 and at nexos 376. w/ iphicrates + callistratus commanded at coregra and repulsed epaminondas before walls of corinth. in 366, together w/ callistratius. accused of treachery in advising the surrender of oropus to the thebans and said defended by plato. went to tachos-king of egypt. at start of the social war 357, jined charles, in command of the athenian fleet. at siege of chios, ship diabled, refused to flee and fell fighting bravely. famous for inventing 'receiving charge'- on left knee w/spears of the front ranks pointed at the enemy, shields on the ground.
CHAMBERS, George- 1803-1840. marine painter. several years followed his father who was a seaman. would sketch while at sea. master observed. set him free to art. started as house painter, then scene painter at the pavillion theater. 1834 elected to the watercolor society, buut he had always been frail and died
