RANDOM WWI BOOK POST

well, almost 1/2 thru. americans are finally in the trenches. the first amercan artilary shot has been flown. and he gives the names of the gunmanners. and much discussion about the first american to give his life. much discussion about the western front of the french towns.
and he talks of a special commander. a man who seems to take relish no matter how hard the endeavor. Major griffiths had fought in the philippine insurrection as a sergeant in the tennessee naional guar, rose to major, then joined the aussies and fought at gallipoli in 1914. wounded, sent to britain to recover. promoted to a british major and sent to france in command of a the sherwood forresters. wounded twice, ypres and loos. but when the americans joined, rejoined the american army, rushing his convalescence. his right hand still not 100%, but thrilled to fight for the US again. he died 3 months later at catigny.
i guess back then you couldn't thrill seek by climbing mountains and sky gliding.
