BUTTON- french bouton. these apparently insignificant articles have produced great alteration in our style of dress, for without them it would have been impossible to have reduced the flowing robes of our forefathers into our present 'simple' costume. button manufacture end of elizabeth I. at 1st only ornamental, but in 1700's, matthew Boulton, became senior partner at boulton + Watt in 1745 and improved manufacture of buttons, especially inlaid and steel. when Soho works were opened in birmingham, one of the departments was occupied in making steel buttons w/ facets that sold 40 grand for a gross. gilt buttons in fashion on accession of george III. much trade in buttons. cabinet maker john taylor, a principle hand in improvements for gilt, plated, and lacquered buttons. ralph heaton improved the making of shanks. blah blah blahb. sanders-fabric covered patents. corded edge, horn buttons.
some buttons have fetched enormous prices, even when made of common material. i may have to post some of my BUTTON COLLECTION.
